AI can save hours of setup and still leave you unable to answer. Here is a lecture workflow that keeps retrieval with you, and the prompts that make that honest.

Summarising a forty page PDF in ten seconds feels like a win. You now have a clean page of bullets. The exam will not ask you to recognise those bullets. It will ask you to reconstruct an argument, apply a formula to a new number, or explain a mechanism when the wording is different from the handout.

Used badly, AI is a second highlighter. Used well, it prepares practice. You still do the hard part. That is the same split as in whether AI can write your notes.

If the model never saw your class materials, it will invent a generic version of the topic. Generic is how you miss the one example your lecturer kept repeating.

A workflow for one lecture

  1. Capture the source. Slides, your notes, or a recording transcript: something from the class, not a random webpage.
  2. Ask for questions, not a summary first. From this material only, write 10 exam questions. Mix recall, explain why, and one application. Do not add facts that are not in the text.
  3. Answer from memory. Close the chat. Write on paper or in a blank doc. Timebox 20 minutes.
  4. Grade yourself against the original. Not against the model’s sample answers. The original is the syllabus.
  5. Only then ask for a short explanation of the misses, and check it against the lecture. If they disagree, trust the lecture.

  • Give me three questions that look similar but test different steps.
  • I answered X. What is missing compared with the source text?
  • Do not praise me. Mark this like a strict examiner.

Protecting yourself from fluent nonsense

Models can sound sure while being wrong on a date, a sign in a formula, or a name. Numbers, definitions, and quotes must exist in your notes or textbook before you memorise them. For STEM, re-solve one problem by hand after any walkthrough. For essays, use AI to grill your outline, not to write the paragraphs you turn in.

When to stop using AI in a session

If you have generated three summaries and still cannot answer yesterday’s questions without looking, stop generating. Switch to retrieval. More output will not create memory.
