Notes That You Can Revise: A Better Use of AI After Class

Stop copying slides. Capture cues in the room, rewrite three claims from memory within a day, then use AI as a second pass, not as a replacement for paying attention.
During the lecture you cannot write a textbook. You can capture cues: the example the teacher spent eight minutes on, the “this will be on the exam” aside, the diagram they drew that is not in the slides, the question you were too slow to ask.
If your notes are a transcript, exam-you has to do the teacher’s job again: decide what mattered. That is why people drown in PDFs in week ten. The capture format that forces the decision now is the one-page note.
In the room: a light capture system
| Where | What you write |
|---|---|
| Main column | Headings and the argument, in fragments. Full sentences only if a definition is precise |
| Margin | ex, exam?, confused, page numbers, timestamps if it is recorded |
| Bottom | Two questions you still have. Naming the gap helps even if you look them up later |
If the class is fast, photograph the board and write only the gaps and examples. Photos without questions become landfill. If you record, decide in advance what you will do with the file: turn a recording into one study session.
Within 24 hours: the 15-minute rewrite
Close the laptop recording. From memory, write the three main claims of the class. Then open the source and correct. Add one example per claim. Throw away anything that does not help you answer a question. Your rewrite should be shorter than the original slides. If it is longer, you copied again.
Retrieving before checking is what makes the session work. Dunlosky and colleagues’ 2013 review put practice testing and distributed practice at the top, and rereading near the bottom.
Where AI belongs: after you have tried
Paste or upload the official material plus your messy notes. Ask for a list of questions the lecture could support, a check of your three claims against the transcript, and a simpler wording of one paragraph you flagged, then verify against the book.
Do not start with “make me notes for this module.” You will get a generic study guide that misses local emphasis. Do not skip class because AI will summarise the recording. You will miss the emphasis, the jokes that mark important ideas, and the chance to ask. Generated notes as a source of truth is the failure mode in can AI write your study notes.
Turn notes into practice the same day
Every heading becomes a question. If you cannot turn a heading into a question, it was decoration. Keep a running cannot-answer-yet list. That list is more valuable than a complete-looking document.
Weekly: one pile, not twelve files
Sunday, merge the week’s one-pagers into a single outline per course. Delete duplicates. Mark anything that never became a question: either turn it into one or drop it.
Where a tool fits
StudyLabAI fits after class: you bring the file you already have, get a tighter map and questions, and you still do the 15-minute memory rewrite. If you only ever read the generated notes, you are back to rereading with extra steps.
Common questions
Can I type the one-pager?
Yes, but typing makes it easier to drift back into transcription. Keep the one page limit strictly.
What if I understood nothing in the lecture?
Write the question at the top, leave the claims blank, put everything in the cannot-answer list. That is a valid page and it tells you what to take to office hours.
Should I use AI during the lecture?
No. In-lecture capture is the part that cannot be generated, because you are the only one there.
