How to Study Anatomy: Relations, Not Lists of Names

Labelling a diagram you can still see is not the exam. Learn what sits next to what, what happens if a structure is cut, and redraw from a blank page.
Anatomy fails people who can name a structure on a coloured atlas and then cannot find it on a grey practical, a clinical stem, or a blank page. The exam is relations: what is next to this, what would go if this were cut, what surface landmark gets you there.
Lists of muscle origins are the comfort activity. They feel like covering the syllabus. They are how you arrive at the lab able to recite and unable to see.
Study one region as a room
Pick a region, not a tissue type. Anterior forearm, not “all flexors in the body.” For that room, answer four things with the atlas shut:
- Boundaries: what walls it in
- Contents: the three to seven structures you must not mix up
- Neighbours: what is superficial, deep, medial, lateral
- One clinical: what is lost if the main nerve or artery here is hit

Draw, cover, redraw
Draw the region once from the atlas. The next day, draw it from memory. Ugly is fine. If a nerve is in the wrong compartment, you do not know it yet, and rereading the pretty figure will not move it.
On a practical, you get a pin, not a caption. Practise that: cover the labels, point, say the name out loud, then the relation. Image occlusion is the card version of the same drill.

If a card is only a name, add the neighbour or the deficit. Names without relations are the anatomy version of a flashcard that is too long and too vague at once. Split them the same way as in how long a flashcard should be.
Embryology and neuroanatomy are the same rule
Embryology is relations in time: what failed to fold, fuse, or migrate, and what adult structure that becomes. Neuroanatomy is relations in tracts: if this bundle is cut, which side, which modality. Draw the pathway. Do not highlight a textbook diagram of it.
A weekly rhythm
New region: one-pager and a first draw the day of the lecture. Next day: redraw and only the misses. Later in the week: mixed pins from older regions, because anatomy exams mix the body on purpose. Cap the session so you still finish. A realistic daily card load is in how many flashcards to review each day.
Where a tool fits

Common questions
Do I need a physical atlas if I have an app?
You need a source you can cover. Paper or screen is secondary. An app that always shows the answer when you hover is a highlighter.
Should I learn every origin and insertion?
Learn the ones your course tests and the ones that explain a deficit. A full insertion list for every muscle in the limb is how people run out of time for relations.
How do I study for spotters?
Timed, no atlas, out loud. One structure, name plus one relation plus one clinical. Then move. Dwelling is rereading.
Is watching dissection videos enough?
As a first look, yes. As the session, no. Pause, look away, say what you expect to see next, then play. The same retrieve-then-check split as in whether AI can write your notes.
