Most decks fail because the cards are too long, too vague, or never reviewed. Write the front like an examiner, split fat cards, and cap the session.

A card with a paragraph on the back is a tiny textbook. You will recognise the paragraph and think you know it. Exams ask for a name, a step, a comparison, or a calculation, usually one move at a time.

Closed fact cards, term to definition, are fine for genuinely arbitrary facts. A whole deck of them is a glossary, and glossaries do not survive an exam that asks you to apply anything.

Split fat cards

Five causes on one card means you always miss cause four and still mark the card “almost.” Make five cards. Add a sixth: list all five in order. Listing is a different skill from recognising one item.

Put the mistake on the card

If you keep mixing two terms, the back should include “Not to be confused with X because Y.” That is more useful than a perfect textbook sentence.

Review so that hard cards show up more

Cards you get right wait longer. Cards you miss come back the same day, then tomorrow. Three envelopes, now, soon and later, do this without an app. Cap the session.   1. 10 cards from the missed pile, out loud.

  3. Close with two questions that are not on cards: a short written explanation. Cards are not the whole exam.
